ATTRACTIVE 1965 AUSTRIAN PROOF SET INCLUDES 2 SILVER COINS

Austria 1965 seven coin Proof setAustria 1965 seven coin Proof set
This unpackaged 7 coin set includes the Austrian 2, 5, 10, 50 Groschen, 1, 5 and 10 Schilling dated 1965 in Proof condition. The 5 and 10 Schilling are silver.  The 26mm silver 10 Schilling depicts a woman wearing a traditional "Golden Bonnet" from the Wachau region in lower Austria on one side and the Austrian shield on the other.  The 23.5mm silver 5 Schilling depicts a famed Lipizzaner stallion with a rider on one side and the Austrian Shield on the other.  Both coins are struck in .640 fine silver.  The aluminum-bronze 1 Schilling and 50 Groschen respectively feature Edelweiss flowers and the Austrian Shield.  The Austrian Eagle holding a hammer and sickle in its claws is on the 10, 5, and 2 Groschen.  The 10 and 2 Groschen is aluminum.  Interestingly the zinc 5 Groschen is struck to standard of the old World War II Nazi 5 Reichspfennig, which was used in Austria during the war. Because zinc is a reactive metal the 5 Groschen is spotted.  It is a 19mm, 2.5 gram zinc coin with a reeded edge.  It is an attractive Proof set that includes two silver coins.

POPULAR 1965 CANADA SILVER PROOF-LIKE SET

Canada 1965 mint set, obverseCanada 1965 mint set, reverse
This six coin Proof-like from the Royal Canadian Mint includes the silver dollar, 50 cents, 25 cents and 10 cents struck in .800 fine silver, as well as the nickel 5 cents and bronze 1 cent.  The coins come were specially struck with a mirror-like surface and come in their original Royal Canadian Mint packaging.  The sets contain 1.11 troy ounces of silver. The sets were issued at the height of the 1960’s coin boom. The 1965 set featured the new Arnold Machin portrait of Queen Elizabeth and the U.S. mint had just halted the manufacturing of Proof sets, all of which sparked further interest in the sets.  Sales were by mail only starting January 2, 1965 and were limited to only five sets per order.   Dealers, investors and collectors flooded Ottawa, crowding the post offices nearest the mint to place multiple orders.  The sets sold out within a few hours and many orders were sent back.  Temporary workers were hired to process the orders and the mint ordered additional presses to fill the demand.  Eventually Canada re-opened the sales for the set, but backlog was so great that many of the 1965 sets were not delivered until 1966.   We have this attractive and popular Proof-like set in their original mint packaging at a modest premium above their melt value. We also have a few original unopened mint sealed boxes of five 1965 Canadian Proof-like sets.  Few of the original mint sealed boxes still exist today, making them a real collector’s item!
Item CA-SET65 CANADA 1965 SIX COIN PROOF-LIKE SET KM-PL16 $25.00

FINLAND  1995 "ECU" MINT SET

Finalnd 1995 mint setFinalnd 1995 mint setFinalnd 1995 mint set
This official 1995 Finland mint set includes the 10 and 50 Pennia, 1, 5 and bi-metallic 10 Markka plus an ususual “ECU” mint medal. The bimetallic 10 Markka features a native capercaille bird.  A rare Lake Saimaa Ringed Seal is on the 5 Markka.  A stylized lion from the Finish coat-of-arms adorns the 1 Markka.  A Polar bear is on the 50 Pennia while flower pods and stems are on the 10 Pennia.  At the time the set was minted it was expected that the new common currency for Europe would be called the Ecu, short for European Currency Unit.  Finland included a potential design for the new coin on the mint medal included in their 1995 mint set and pictured it on the cover of the set.  Some nations objected to the name Ecu, as an Ecu was also an 18th century French coin, so the name of the new currency was officially changed to the Euro in 1999.

San Marino is a tiny republic founded in 301AD by a stone mason known as St. Marinus as a refuge for Christians escaping Roman persecution.  It is completely surrounded by Italy.  In 1972 San Marino issued its first official mint set. Until the introduction of the Euro, each year San Marino would feature new, artistic designs on all their coins, based on a theme.  We recently obtained some of the scarce, early San Marino mint sets.  The sets come in a mint issued flexible plastic holder (no box). The sets included 8 coins: 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100 and silver 500 Lire.    The 1973 silver 500 Lire depicts a woman releasing a dove.  The other seven denominations have unusual incuse designs featuring various mythological figures.  The 1974 and 1975 sets feature a wide variety of animal life from spiders to a cat and dog.  Family Life is the theme of the 1976 set. . All the sets include the silver 500 Lire which is 29mm and contains .2953 troy ounces of silver. When silver prices skyrocketed some year ago, many of the sets were broken up and the 500 Lire melted, leaving few complete sets available for collectors today.  Some coins may be toned.

San Marino is a tiny, mountainous country completely surrounded by Italy. It was founded by about 350AD by stonecutter as a refuge for Christians escaping Roman persecution.  Giuseppe Garibaldi allowed San Marino to remain independent when he unified the rest of Italy as a reward for providing him refuge after his earlier unsuccessful war of Italian independence.  The 1975 stainless steel 50 Lire features a school of fish.  The 1976 stainless steel 100 Lire depicts a family seated in their home.  The 1992 aluminum-bronze 200 Lire pictures Columbus navigating by the stars.  The bi-metallic 1983 500 Lire depicts the threat of nuclear war with a design that features three horses above two dead or dying people.  The obverses of all four coins feature the three towers of San Marino on the obverse.  The bi-metallic 1997 1000 Lire celebrates the 1000th anniversary of the founding of San Marino's town hall.  It pictures the Hall on one side of the coin and a stylized lion holding a banner and the San Marino arms on the other.   All 5 coins are Uncirculated.
