COINS OF BURMA AND MYANMAR

Burma 1966 5 coin set: 1 - 50 Pyas picturing Aung SanMyanmar 1999 5 coin set depicting Chinze (Chinthe) Lion
Burma was once one of the richest countries in Asia.  In 1962 the military overthrew the government, and through its mismanagement turned it into one of the poorest nations in the world.  The 1966 five coin set includes the round 1, scalloped 5, square 10, scalloped 25 and round 50 Pyas picturing Aung San, who is called the father of Burma. The coins are aluminum and grade XF - Unc.  His daughter, Aung San Suu was held under house arrest by the military for many years.  In 1989 the military renamed the country Myanmar.  The 1999 five coin set includes the bronze 1 Kyat, brass 5 and 10 Kyats, and copper-nickel 50 and 100 Kyats.  The coins show the name of the country as Myanmar and depict a mythical Chinze lion on the obverse.  According to legend, a princess had a son through her marriage to a lion, but later abandoned the lion, who then became enraged and terrorized the country. The son slew this terrorizing lion, and then when he returned home, found out from his mother that he had killed his own father. The 1999 coin set is Uncirculated.
