Anyone
serious about the study of coins should have a
good magnifier. It helps saves the eyes from needless strain of
looking at tiny details and is invaluable when grading coins, checking
for varieties and mint errors and detecting counterfeits. It is
amazing how much more detail can be seen with a good lens.
Exactly what type of lens you use depends on your personal preferences.
The more power you have the more details that
can be seen, however the smaller the field of view. Many
collectors like the 10x triplet loupe (pictured). It provides a high
degree of magnification with minimal distortion. The Packette
magnifiers are just slightly larger than a pack of matches and come
with a hard plastic cover that opens and shuts. The 5x has an
excellent field of view and provides a good level
of magnification. The 2 lens folding pocket magnifiers are among
the
most versitle, as the lenses can be used seperately or in combination
to
produce three different powers. A swing-away
case of tough, durable plastic serves both as a handle and as a
protective case. The Anco round readers are a line of moderately
priced hand lenses. |

Now that you have been warned and are proceeding with caution, I
will describe a few of these products. e-Z-est Coin Cleaner, formerly
known as Jeweluster, is a coin dip - it
turns dark coins into bright coins. Briefly dip a tarnished coin into
the solution and wash off VERY thoroughly. It works best on
lightly tarnished Unc.
and Proof silver coins. It leaves copper coins looking unnatural
and
can seriously damage nickel coins if not properly washed
off. MS-70 removes surface contamination while having a
minimal affect on the coins color. It is especially useful with
coins that have green PVC damage or plastic residue on coins. Use
gloves as it also takes the skin oil out of your fingers. Unisolvent
and Koinsolv are also recommended for removing surface contaminants
without affecting the toning of the coin. Coin Care is a coin
cleaner and conditioner. It removes surface dirt and "conditions"
or protects the coin. Some of my customers are using Coin Care
now that
Blue Ribbon is no longer available. The Nic-A-Lene is designed to
clean nickel and clad coins, though it does affect their toning.
Nic-A-Spray is formulated to clean silver and gold coins.
Nick-a-tone cleans and tones copper and brass coins, however it
often will darken them in the process. I do not recomend it for
Uncirculated of Proof coins. Nic-a-date is an acid that
temporarily restores the date on worn buffalo nickels - and leaves the
coin looking horrible. Deller Darkener is useful for trying to
hide your mistake
of over cleaning a coin, leaving it with an unnatural
appearance. It works best on copper coins. If you are going
to experiment with coin cleaning I recommend you also use gloves and
tongs to prevent getting finger prints on the coins and keeping you
fingers out of the chemicals.
