FINLAND  1995 "ECU" MINT SET

Finalnd 1995 mint setFinalnd 1995 mint setFinalnd 1995 mint set
This official 1995 Finland mint set includes the 10 and 50 Pennia, 1, 5 and bi-metallic 10 Markka plus an ususual “ECU” mint medal. The bimetallic 10 Markka features a native capercaille bird.  A rare Lake Saimaa Ringed Seal is on the 5 Markka.  A stylized lion from the Finish coat-of-arms adorns the 1 Markka.  A Polar bear is on the 50 Pennia while flower pods and stems are on the 10 Pennia.  At the time the set was minted it was expected that the new common currency for Europe would be called the Ecu, short for European Currency Unit.  Finland included a potential design for the new coin on the mint medal included in their 1995 mint set and pictured it on the cover of the set.  Some nations objected to the name Ecu, as an Ecu was also an 18th century French coin, so the name of the new currency was officially changed to the Euro in 1999.

GREAT BRITAIN’S PUZZLE COIN SET  Restocked

Great Britain coin set: 1 Pence - 1 PoundIn 2008 Great Britain introduced an unusual new series of coins.  The 1 Pound features the British coat-of-arms.  The lower denominations each picture a portion of the arms, so that when the coins were placed together like a puzzle, the arms would appear more or less complete.  Perhaps the designs were done in anticipation of the eventual breakup of the country, with Scotland’s independence.  As always, the Queen is on the obverse of each coin.  The 7 coin set includes the 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50 Pence and 1 Pound, dated 2008 to 2012 in Uncirculated condition.
Item GB-SET7 GREAT BRITAIN 7 COIN SET: 1 PENCE - 1 POUND, 2008-12 KM1107-1113 UNC. $15.00

COINS OF MYANMAR

San Marino is a tiny republic founded in 301AD by a stone mason known as St. Marinus as a refuge for Christians escaping Roman persecution.  It is completely surrounded by Italy.  In 1972 San Marino issued its first official mint set. Until the introduction of the Euro, each year San Marino would feature new, artistic designs on all their coins, based on a theme.  We recently obtained some of the scarce, early San Marino mint sets.  The sets come in a mint issued flexible plastic holder (no box). From 1972 until 1976 the sets included 8 coins: 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100 and silver 500 Lire.  The 1972 set featured the life of St. Marino (Marinus), who founded the country in 350AD.  The attractive silver 500 Lire features a mother holding her child.  The 1973 silver 500 Lire depicts a woman releasing a dove.  The other seven denominations have unusual incuse designs featuring various mythological figures.  The 1974 and 1975 sets feature a wide variety of animal life from spiders to a cat and dog.  Family Life is the theme of the 1976 set.  Starting in 1978 a 200 Lire was added making it a 9-coin set.  The 1978 theme was work and life. All the sets include the silver 500 Lire which is 29mm and contains .2953 troy ounces of silver. When silver prices skyrocketed some year ago, many of the sets were broken up and the 500 Lire melted, leaving few complete sets available for collectors today.  Some coins may be toned.

San Marino is a tiny, mountainous country completely surrounded by Italy. It was founded by about 350AD by stonecutter as a refuge for Christians escaping Roman persecution.  Giuseppe Garibaldi allowed San Marino to remain independent when he unified the rest of Italy as a reward for providing him refuge after his earlier unsuccessful war of Italian independence.  The 1975 stainless steel 50 Lire features a school of fish.  The 1976 stainless steel 100 Lire depicts a family seated in their home.  The 1992 aluminum-bronze 200 Lire pictures Columbus navigating by the stars.  The bi-metallic 1983 500 Lire depicts the threat of nuclear war with a design that features three horses above two dead or dying people.  The obverses of all four coins feature the three towers of San Marino on the obverse.  The bi-metallic 1997 1000 Lire celebrates the 1000th anniversary of the founding of San Marino's town hall.  It pictures the Hall on one side of the coin and a stylized lion holding a banner and the San Marino arms on the other.   All 5 coins are Uncirculated.

THAILAND BI-METALLIC 10 BAHT COMMEMORATIVES

Thailand 10 Bahts
Thailand introduced circulating bi-metallic 10 Baht commemorative coins in 1995.  Since then it has issued a wide range of these popular coins honoring numerous important events, anniversaries,  government agencies and  celebrations of the Royal Family.  Though the coins are reasonably priced and popular with collectors, they can be difficult to obtain.  One of our correspondents has put together a collection of 61 different of these commemorative coins.  This remarkable set includes nearly all of the 10 Baht coins issued thus far, all in Uncirculated condition, and at less than $3 per coin.  It would be a difficult set to put together at any price.
